In the Spirit of Solidarity, Oakland Teachers and Support Staff Aid Fire Victims in Paradise and Chico With Donation
OAKLAND — Today, the Oakland Education Association (OEA) announced its support of the students and educators of Paradise and Chico through its own Membership Assistance Fund (MAF).
A grant of $1,000 has been approved by the union to aid our colleagues who are suffering from the devastation caused by the recent Camp Fire firestorm. This donation has been awarded in the memory of the 36 mainly young people who died two years ago in the Ghost Ship fire in our Fruitvale neighborhood in Oakland.
The MAF was begun in 1996 as part of yearly OEA dues ($10 per member) in the aftermath of the 1989 Bay Area earthquake, the 1991 firestorm and our 1996 strike.
Fast forwarding to 2018, the fund now has over $700,000 available to distribute to members and their families in the event of another natural disaster in our city and/or an extended work stoppage.
Recently, the OEA has received pledges from its sister union locals in the Bay Area and beyond with the goal of increasing this dual purpose fund to a million dollars in preparation for a likely strike against the Oakland Unified School District early in 2019.
For more information on this MAF, please contact Keith Brown, OEA President, at 510-763-4020 or via email at [email protected].
To donate directly to the educators of Butte County, please send checks to the Chico Unified Teachers Association at 819 East Fifth Ave., Chico, CA 95926. Make checks out to “CUTA Fire Relief Fund.” Or go to the GoFundMe page here.
