June 12, 2019 OUSD School Board Meeting

June 12, 2019 @ 5:30 pm - 7:00 pm

Come to the OUSD School Board Meeting

June 12, 2019, 5:30 p.m.
La Escuelita Great Room, 1050 2nd Ave., Oakland

Oakland community members and school workers will speak out at the Oakland Unified School District (OUSD) board meeting against attacks on public schools in East and West Oakland.
  • We stand with Darnisha Wright.

An educator who was viciously choked by OUSD Board Director Jumoke Hinton Hodge at the end of the recent Oakland teachers strike is still under attack. After Kindergarten Teacher DarnishaWright notified the district that she intended to take legal action in response to the assault, her position at Markham Elementary was terminated. As a highly qualified and respected African American teacher serving students in her own community of East Oakland, Mrs. Wright is exactly the kind of educator Oakland Unified School District (OUSD) needs and claims to want. Parents and educators are demanding that OUSD stop the retaliation against Mrs. Wright and return her to her position teaching kindergarten at Markham.

Stop the charter co-locations at Howard Elementary and West Oakland Middle School (WOMS)

Teachers, parents and students of Howard Elementary School, recently learned that Francophone Charter School of Oakland has been offered space on its campus to expand its co-location next year. The loss of classroom space will force special education and reading intervention teachers to work out of storage closets.  This co-location will cause significant academic and emotional harm to Howard’s most vulnerable students. East Oakland is already experiencing extreme displacement, gentrification, and other factors that impede students’ health and well-being. Members of the Howard Elementary and WOMS communities are calling on school board members to stop the destructive charter co-location that was imposed on them without their advice or consent.

  • Castlemont community call to action. Stop the 40-year lease being offered to Leadership Preparatory School at Castlemont High School with only ten days public notice! There has been no community engagement in this process.

  • Teacher Substitutes Organize for June 12. A major strength  of OEA’s 7-day strike in 2019 was the overwhelming support from its unionized teacher substitutes. OEA Teacher Substitutes demand respect from OUSD. Teachersubstitutes deserve safe working conditions, legally mandated sick leave pay, and full retroactive back pay.
